President_150A word from our President

A very sincere welcome to all club Lions, club supporters and friends.

It is my intention, during my year in office to do my utmost to continue the good work of the club, not only with the “Dream” holidays for well deserving children but also by aiding and assisting as many needy situations and projects within the local community as possible.

I know this can be achieved because of the acknowledged hard work of the Lions members and the fantastic support we receive from all of our Lion supporters.

The worldwide financial situation in general continues to have an impact on this island and has quite naturally affected the donations coming into charities.

Despite the economic downturn, the Lions have by traditional fundraising methods and through revenue generated by our charity shops, at Las Gaviotas, Costa del Silencio and at the Apolo Centre, Los Cristianos, have been able to maintain financial support to the many just and needy causes in our community.

For the last seventeen years Tenerife Sur Lions have arranged and raised funds to provide holidays each year for some seventy-five underprivileged and physically/mentally challenged children and their carers from both the United Kingdom and Tenerife.  These holidays have proved not only a time of excitement in the lives of these kids but also of additional benefit to their life skills.

2010 was no exception as in May a party of forty-five arrived in Tenerife for a week stay and were treated to visits and excursions to some of Tenerife’s top tourist attractions. In July we took a group of thirty-two children, with their carers to the UK, where they enjoyed a holiday at the Haven Holidays "Wild Ducks" Holiday Park near Great Yarmouth, Norfolk and treated to number of excursions and activities during the week. Planning for 2011 is already underway with estimated costs of around 35,000 Euros the challenge is even greater this year than in the past.

If you feel you can help us to further our aim of giving happiness to under privileged Kids in any way, please contact us.

Contact details are on the contacts page of this web site. We would welcome your support, ideas or suggestions.

The Spanish Government has now recognized our charity work with what is known as a Foundation status. So that any person or company supporting one of our projects can reclaim either 15% or 25% from their annual tax returns

This year (2011) we celebrated our 26th. Birthday or Charter, which on this Island of “Here today-gone tomorrow” is some achievement.

Although we are only a small club of seventeen members, we are judged as one of the leading clubs in Europe by the money raised and dispersed throughout the local community as well as supporting catastrophic events worldwide.

A recently published list of the many and varied projects and community support efforts we have been involved in over the years came as a something of a surprise even to us.

Based in the south  of the island as we are we liaise with three  of the local Ayuntamientos or town halls, Arona, San Miguel and Adeje whose social services departments come to us for help especially with clothing and household items when families are displaced

We also work in co-operation with the Islands Judicial system when people are required to do community work as part of a sentence handed down by a court.  We accept the responsibility to find the work and control the administration and fulfillment of the community sentence, normally 80-150 hours spread over weeks or months.

Thank you for visiting our web site and I hope it has been informative and useful.
